The All-New 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Pursues Three Avenues For Law Enforcement

The path of least resistance could define future police department pursuit-vehicle purchase decisions now that Ford Motor Company has rolled out a 2020 lineup of Police Interceptor Utility vehicles that includes a high-performance hybrid model alongside turbo V6 and naturally aspirated V6 editions. Akin to the Ford Explorer, the Police Interceptor differs in that it’s specifically built from the ground up for the demands of law enforcement duty, providing additional crash protection in its architecture and ample customization capability to accommodate after-market police service systems.

This week, RPM News Weekly made the most of an opportunity to test drive the three Interceptor models on the Massachusetts State Police EVOC test track in Ayer. Each proved thoroughly distinctive and worthy of being called pursuit vehicles.

Yes, the hybrid is pursuit rated – in fact earning accolades from the RPM team for its quickness, handling and use of regenerative braking. It actually outdoes both the new 3.3-liter naturally aspirated model and the outgoing 3.7-liter model in straight out 0 to 60 miles per hour driving and total horsepower (Hybrid -318 hp combined vs. 3.3L – 285 hp vs. 3.7L – 304hp). High performance top dog however is the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 variant at 400 horsepower.
